This is a very interesting story, in which Joseph Richard Carson, descendent of Adam Carson Sr., moves to Brazos County from Georgia while still a youth, and subsequently married Nathan Franklin’s daughter Malinda Amanda Carson. Then, when she dies, he marries Malinda’s sister, Sarah Odelia Carson.

This file starts with the father of Joseph Richard, the son of Adam Carson Sr., Dr. Joseph Thomas CARSON, MD. Please refer to Chapter 2 for information on Adam Carson, Sr.

Note that there was a generation missed in the Adam Carson line, as compared with the John C. Carson lines. In other words, Joseph Richard is not in the same generation as his two wives. These are so designated in the generation headings.

SIXTH GENERATION

41     Dr. Joseph Thomas CARSON, MD(?) was born about 1801 in Atlanta, Georgia. He appeared on the census on 1830 in Troup County, Georgia. He appeared on the 1850 census in Putnam County Georgia, and on the census of 1870 in Marshallville District, Macon Co., Georgia. He studied for the ministry and medicine, but was unsuccessful in both. He was a "drunkard and a dandy". He married Jane Watson, who was a great beauty, so said. Joseph was a very brilliant man but fickle and erratic. It is reported that he served as a medical doctor during the War Between the States, but there is no verification for this. (76) Jane (Watson) CARSON was born about 1818 in Georgia. She died in Wellburn Texas, which is less than 10 miles from Bryan, Texas, so she no doubt had moved to Texas to be close to Joseph Richard. Their children were:

909     Thomas Watson CARSON was born about 1843. He appeared on the census of 1850 in Putnam County, Georgia. He was married to (912) (unknown) CARSON. Their children were:

78     Joseph Richard CARSON was born on 23 Nov., 1852, in Atlanta, Georgia. He appeared on the census in 1880 in Brazos County, Texas. He died on 4 Feb., 1923 in Brazos Co., Texas, of "streptococus of the face" (according to the death certificate). The death certificate was signed by his son, O.G. Carson, and since no hospital was listed, it is presumed that he died at his home at Union Hill. He was buried in Boonville Cemetery, Brazos County, Texas.

His first wife was (87) Malinda Amanda (Carson) CARSON, daughter of (63) Nathan Franklin CARSON and (80) Amanda CARSON, who was born on 11 Nov., 1853 in Brazos County, Texas. They were married on 10 Dec., 1872 in Brazos County, Texas. She died on 3 Feb., 1884 in Comanche County, Texas (they were married for 12 years). After the death of Malinda Amanda (Carson) CARSON, Joseph Richard married the sister of Malinda Amanda, (92) Sarah "Sallie" Odelia (Carson) CARSON on 21 Dec., 1884 in Comanche County, Texas. She was born on 11 Dec., 1858 in Brazos County, Texas. She appeared on the census in 1860 in Brazos County, Texas. She died in November of 1892 (the same month as the birth of Mary Leeta) in Marquez, Leon County, Texas (they were married for 8 years). Their children were:

If they were married (at the earliest) in 1893, she would have been 35 years old, so it is possible that they could have had children, but if so, they are not known.

120     Oscar Gentry CARSON was born on 10 Oct., 1883 in Comanche County, Texas. He died on 18 Feb., 1948 in Brazos County, Texas, death certificate #1167865. He was buried in Bryan City Cemetery, Bryan, Brazos County, Texas. He was married to (915) Malinda Jane "Jennie" (Nelson) CARSON in January, 1903 in Leon County, Texas. 123    Edward Lafayette CARSON was born on 19 Dec. 1876 in Brazos County, Texas. He died on 1 Aug., 1902 in Groesbeck, Limestone County, Texas. He was 26 years old. He had committed suicide - "The Groesbeck Journal" reported:
     "ED CARSON SUICIDES. Friday evening at about 8 o'clock a report of a pistol rang out in the neighborhood of Herod's saloon, and on investigation Ed Carson was found lying upon the sidewalk with a mortal wound in the breast, grasping a revolver in his hand, which was fearfully powder burned from the flash of the pistol. A traveling man, whose name we failed to learn, was the first to reach his side, and says he only gasped once or twice after he reached him. Just before committing the act, Ed requested of Clint Herod the loan of his pistol for the night; and not dreaming of the tragedy soon to be enacted, gave it to him, and he walked out of the door and leaned up against an old ice box that was sitting in front of the saloon, for a few minutes, and then, without uttering a word, drew the pistol and turned it upon himself, ushering his soul into eternity. Justice Bates reviewed the remains, and found it in accordance with the facts above stated.

    The deceased was about 25 years old, and has lived here for several years, having worked for Squire O. Wiley, Young Jones, Bud Jackson and others, upt until about the first of the year, when he went over near Oakwoods, and remained there until about a month ago, when he came back. He has been noticed to be gloomy and despondent for some cause, and on several occasions has stated to acquaintances that life held no attractions for him, and that he might as well be dead, though no one thought he had any idea of suicide. He was buried Saturday evening in Faulkenberry cemetery. The deceased leaves, bsides a brother who was her, his father and mother, who reside in Freeston County."

124     Thomas Ivan CARSON was born 6 Nov., 1881 in College Station, Brazos County, Texas, and died on 10 July, 1956 in San Antonio, Bexar County, Texas. He had been a brakeman on the railroad and had lost an arm in an accident. He is buried in Mission South Cemetery in San Antonio. He was married to (243) Ola (Hall) CARSON. They had one child:

126     Malinda Amanda "Amma" (Carson) TYLER was born 27 Aug., 1887 in Hamilton, Texas, and died 24 March, 1972 in Denver, Arapahoe County, Colorado. She married (245)William Franklin TYLER on 4 Sept., 1915 in el Paso, El Paso County Texas. He was the son of (916) William TYLER and (917) Frances (Forbes) TYLER. He was born 2 March, 1886 in Texas and died 7 Jan., 1931 in El Paso, El Paso County, Texas. "Amma" CARSON and Mary Leeta CARSON were sisters. Mary Leeta became ill and her sister, Amma moved to El Paso from Bryan, Brazos County, Texas, to care for Mary Leeta and her children. Following Mary Leeta’s death, Amma married widower William TYLER. Their children were:

127     Hattie Alveeta (Carson) KAFKA was born on 12 Oct., 1888 in Waco, Texas. She died on 13 Oct., 1950 in Waco, Texas. She was married to (918) Jack O. KAFKA. Their only known child was:

She later married (919) Landry JENSEN. They had no children.

128     Mary Leeta CARSON was born 6 Nov., 1892 in Marquez, Leon County, Texas, and died 4 Feb., 1914 in El Paso County, Texas. She married (245) William Franklin TYLER on 9 Feb., 1908 in McLennan County, Texas. He was the son of (916) William TYLER and (917) Frances (Forbes) TYLER. 129     Jennie Olivia (Carson) NELSON (phot0). She was born on 22 Sept. 1885 in Comanche Co., Texas and died in 1969 in Dallas, Dallas County, Texas of bone cancer of the jaw. She is buried in Restland Cemetery in Dallas. She was married to (255) William Newton (Bill) NELSON (photo), who was born on 11 Dec., 1878 in Fairfield, Texas and died on 28 Sept., 1958 of a heart attack in Los Angeles, California. He is buried in Restland Cemetery in Dallas, Texas. Their children were:

130     Lillian LaRay Odelia (Carson) DOTY was born on 5 April, 1890 in Marquez, Leon County, Texas, and died on 12 March, 1972 in Waco, McLennan County, Texas. According to her obituary, she was residing at 2520 Colonial in Waco at the time of her death. She had moved to Waco in 1911. She had been a nurse for a local doctor and a saleslady with Goldstein-Migel Co. She was a member of the Columbus Avenue Baptist Church She was married to (489) Jesse R. Sr. DOTY. He died on 25 Jan., 1954 in Waco, McLennan County, Texas. According to his obituary, he resided at 2520 Colonial Avenue in Waco at the time of his death. He had been a policeman. Their known children were:

He was married to (434) Juanita (Flowers) CARSON, who was born on 7 Dec., 1913., and in November of 2004 she was living in Lufkin, Texas at the age of 90 . Their only child was:

229     Lucille (Carson) DUSTIN was born on 28 June, 1921 in McGregor, Texas, a twin to Louise (Carson) LEWIS. She was married to (435) Richard DUSTIN. In 2004 she was living in Clearwater, Florida. She had two children, Richard Charles Dustin and Linda Dujstin.

234     Louise (Carson) LEWIS was a twin to (229) Lucille (Carson) DUSTIN. She died 19 Sept.., 1990 in Roseville, California. She was married to (436) Wayne LEWIS. They had one son, Tallmadge Edward Lewis.

231     Ray Hudson CARSON was born in Oct., 1923 in Brazos County, Texas, and attended Stephens High School there. He served in the U.S. Navy between 1943 and 1945, training at Great Lakes Naval Training Station, Illinois. He was in the Pacific Theater of Operations, was an Aviation Machinists Mate Third Class, and received the good conduct medal, Purple Heart, and Phillipines Liberation Medal. He was killed in action on Iwo Jima in Feb., 1945.

233     Nellie Lee (Carson) EVERETT was born on 21 March, 1900 and died on 25 Feb., 1938 in Abilene, Texas. She was married to (437) Roy L. EVERETT. She had been a resident of Abilne from 1927 until her death, and had been in poor health her last two years. Their known children were:

237     Eldridge F. "Kit" CARSON was married to (442) Mildred (Smith) CARSON on 13 July, 1942 in Las Cruces, Dona Ana County, New Mexico. A newspaper article indicated spouse as "Bernice" Smith of Hollywood, California. Their known child was:

242     T.J. CARSON was born 1 Jan., 1886 in Missouri. He was married to (444) Ruby (Unknown) CARSON. It is not known if they had any children.

He was later married to (445) Lilla Bell (Hall) CARSON. They had no children.

244     Thomas Ivan Jr. CARSON was born on June 15, 1910 in Bay City, Texas but spent most of his childhood in Waco, Texas. He was married to (2166) Elizabeth (Green) CARSON for a short time. They had one son:

His second marriage was to (2169) Anna Louise (Mangham) CARSON. She was born on 30 April, 1912 in San Antonio, Bexar County, Texas. They married 11 Jan., 1936 and had one daughter:

Thomas Ivan served with the Marine Corps in WWII in the Pacific. After the war, he worked for, then owned, a frozen foods company. He died 31 May, 1982 and Louise died on 21 Nov., 2001. They are both buried in Sunset memorial Park in San Antonio.

256     Opal Alveeta (Nelson) HANKS was born on 9 Nov., 1911 in Malakoff, Texas and died of cancer on 24 July, 1960 in Houston, Harris County, Texas. She is buried in Price Chapel Cemetery, Anderson County, TX. She was married to (932) Peter Gerald LEONARD Jr. He was born on 30 Sept., 1905 in Illinois and died on 5 Feb., 1960 of a heart attack. Their only child was:

259    Harold "Hal" Frank NELSON was born on 26 Jan., 1916 in Hamlin, Fisher County, Texas, and died on 3 Sept., 1987 of emphysema in Dallas, Texas. He is buried in Restland Cemetery in Dallas. He was married to (2194) Jessie (Roberson) NELSON, who was born on 24 Feb., 1922 near Frisco, Collin County, Texas. They had a son:

260    Aubrey Oscar NELSON was born on 21 March, 1920 in Thackville, Oklahoma and died on 22 January, 2007 of emphysema in Dallas, Texas and is buried in Restland Cemetery in Dallas. He married (2241) Dorothy (England) NELSON who was born on 10 August, 1926 in the area of Love Field, Dallas, Texas. They had two children:

261     Leon [pronounced Lee-own] (Nelson) MORGAN was born on 17 Dec., 1913 in Malakoff, Texas, and died of cancer on 17 April, 1995, in Dallas, Texas. She is buried in Restland Cemetery in Dallas. She was married to (474) Douglas MORGAN, who as born in 1911 in Oklahoma, and died in 1993 in Dallas, Texas. He is buried in Restland Cemetery in Dallas. They had no known children.

262     Otis Buster NELSON was born on 16 Oct. 1908 and died of a stroke on 23 Feb., 1973 in Dallas, Texas. He is buried in Restland Cemetery in Dallas. He was married to (936) Gussie L. (Hubbard) NELSON Their only known child is:
    937     Otho B. "Sonny" NELSON, who was born on 10 Dec., 1928 in Anderson County, Texas,
               and died on 12 Dec., 2004 in Japan as a result of complications following a heart/lung
               transplant. A memorial service was held for him on 5 Jan., 2005, in Dallas, Texas.

Otis later married (2218) Pete (Hodges) NELSON. Note that "Pete" was pronounced "Pe-tee".

263    Mary Bernice (Nelson) BOWMAN was born on 8 Sept., 1918, died on 15 May, 1992 in Dallas, Texas and is buried in Restland Cemetery there. She was married to (475) Bill EDWARDS. She had a daughter,

She Married (2240) Earl BOWMAN, who was born in 1917 and died in 1989. They had no children.

264      Jesse R. DOTY was born on 7 Sept., 1911 in Waco, Texas, and died on 29 Sept., 1977
in Waco, McLennan County, Texas. According to his obituary, he had been a resident of Dallas, Texas. He had attended school in Waco and worked for Texas Life Insurance Co. prior to entering military service in 1940. He served in Europe. After being discharged in 1954, he lived in San Antonio for two years and moved to Dallas in 1947. He traveled for Pease Blueprint Co., and then went into the blueprint business himself. He also worked as a car salesman for Steakley Brothers Chevrolet. He was a member of White Rock Methodist Church in Dallas. He married (920) Stella (Unknown) DOTY. Their known child was:

253     Otis Ivan TYLER was born 17 March, 1912 in Waco, McLennan County, Texas, and died 5 June, 1960 in Pharr, Hidalgo County, Texas. He married first (465) Ann (Stone) TYLER on 17 Feb., 1934 in Las Cruces Dona Ana County, New Mexico, and second (465) Dorothy Mae (Darrell) TYLER, born on 14 July, 1911. According to Mary Leeta TYLER (on 30 March, 2000), Otis had been kind of a wanderer and met Ann, who was a very sweet woman and a hard worker, but Otis just didn’t love her that much. She had a son before they married and he wasn’t good to either her or the son and he basically dumped her and later married Dorothy, who made him "toe the line".

254     William Robert TYLER was born on 13 Dec., 1913 in Waco, McLennan County, Texas and died on 5 Nov., 1978 in Springfield, Greene County, Missouri. He was married to (467) Elsie Icey (Parks) TYLER in about 1936. She was born on 24 Sept., 1915 in Cache, Comanche County, Oklahoma, and died there on 7 March, 1988. Their known child was:

247     Milton Dale Sr. TYLER was born on 10 April, 1918 in El Paso County, Texas, and died on 2 Sept., 1996 in Denver, Arapahoe County, Colorado. He is buried in Fairmount Cemetery, Aurora, Colorado. He was married to (448) Thelma Cecilia (Smith) TYLER on 22 Nov., 1941 in Denver, where the met. Milton was stationed there with the Army Air Corps during World War II. Thelma was born on 3 Nov. 1920, in Denver, and died on 13 Aug., 1948 in Denver. She was the child of (923) Edward Winthrop SMITH and (924) Jessie Dorothea (Baldwin) SMITH. She died in childbirth along with her baby daughter on 13 Aug., 1948 in Denver, Arapahoe County, Colorado, and is buried in Fairmont Cemetery in Aurora, Colorado. Their children were:

248     Amma Alveeta (Tyler) CAVE was born on 21 Aug., 1920 in El Paso County, Texas, and died on 26 April, 1999 in Springfield, Greene County, Missouri. She was married to (451) Pleasant William CAVE on 16 June, 1938 in Las Cruces, Dona Ana County, New Mexico. He was the son of (925) William CAVE and (926) Glessie (Fray) CAVE, and was born on 1 April, 1915 in Springfield, Greene County, Missouri, and died on 27 March, 1964 in Dallas County, Texas. Their known children were:

She retired from working in the administrative area after about 15 years while living in Georgia. There, she opened a craft business with her daughter Kristin and later retired from that. In 2003 she began working for the Moultrie -Colquitt County Library System, which includes the Ellen Payne Odom Genealogical Library. On August 11, 2007, she will have been there four years. At the library she is an Information Specialist and works with the Webmaster. She is still (2007) interested in art and loves to write. She helped form a group called Sunbelt Writers in Moultrie.   She enjoys art, writing, reading and her white cat, Angel.
